A secret wish...I wish I discovered them sooner August 25, 2008 E. Anderson A year or two ago I discovered Propaganda on the internet. I totally dug what little I heard especially since I grew up in the '80s and on new wave music. It wasn't until a few weeks ago did I finally get around to buying one of their cds, A SECRET WISH. Initially I didn't take to the music but over time, the more I listened to the album, the more I found myself enjoying it. The production is terrible but I can overlook that flaw. The overall sound of A SECRET WISH is a new wave fan's wet dream. To me, the band's brand of new wave music is reminiscent of Book of Love, early Depeche Mode, Yaz, and a heavy heaping of OMD. The music isn't nearly as catchy as say Depeche Mode but what makes Propaganda so interesting is how they constructed and layered their music. I really liked how the vocals were set up on the song "Jewel". There is this collision of noises crashing together and then the vocals were layered on top of the sampled sounds. I also enjoyed the hint of jazz in the opening track "Dream Within a Dream". That jazz influences was not something I expected. My favorite song on the entire album has to be "Strength to Dream". What a great way to end the cd. I wish I knew sooner about Propaganda given how big of a new wave fan I am but I am glad I know about them now.
The hype is true: THIS IS A SYNTH POP MASTERPIECE May 15, 2008 insoc (Miami, Florida United States) I read in a Q MAGAZINE synth pop special about how great this album was and that it was considered a essential synth pop album. All the reviews on amazon.com agreed. Given that I boughth the album and I can only say: WOW! What was the last time you heard an album for the first time and song after song perfection you wish the album would never end? This only happens with a few albums, those considered masterpieces. Well, there you have it. From the first chords of the very first song you will know you are hearing something special. I love all the songs! If you are a fan of Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Depeche, etc. you will instantly fall in love with this album.
on my top 25 March 6, 2008 C. C. Gullo (Rochester NY USA) This CD is definately on my top 25 greatest & influencial albums of all time!!! If U like the brilliant Sisters of Mercy, U will love this disc. Claudia Brucken, who found this group and went on to form ACT and a solo career, is a industrial music genius. "A secret wish" is a good start of great albums to come from her. Good dance music as well. Fantastic!!!
Visionary! One of my favorite albums ever November 26, 2007 Avner Shemi (New York, NY, USA) Propaganda joined the ranks of Kraftwerk in the electronica hall of fame with 'A Secret Wish' -- one of my favorite albums ever. The album symbolizes 80s pop/goth excess in the best way, and not without humor, but is visionary in production values and still sounds fresh. "Dr. Mabuse" and "P:Machinery" are standout tracks in this cohesive, even narrative, album.
Very 80's October 4, 2007 B. Smith (St. Louis, MO) I heard this material for the first time online. Can't remember the internet station but it may have been Alternative 80's or something like that. I lived in Boston from 1980 to 1987. And was surprised that I don't recall hearing it way back in the day. It seemed to strike a chord with me. Something about the mood of the overall material is very appealing. It has a silly and serious German quality in the lyrics, 'cause they are a German band. Picture Mike Meyer "Dieter." But the best songs are haunting and a great document of that time.
