The Charlie Rose Bill Moyers Yvette Vega segment December 17, 2007 Shalom Freedman (Jerusalem,Israel) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This segment marks the return of Charlie Rose to his program after a two- month absence. In it he and his assistant Yvette Vega tell to his friend and mentor Bill Moyers the story of his recent medical adventure. When in Syria to interview Syrian dictator Bashar Assad , Rose felt chest pain. He called his New York cardiologist David Blumenthal, and somehow it was arranged for Rose to be flown to Paris for heart- surgery. On the way he was checked by two Syrian doctors who treated him in a competent fashion. In Paris the pioneer in mitrial valve surgery Alain Carpentier decided to operate on Rose, an operation that lasted over minute hours. This part of the story is told by Vega who accompanied Rose and who knew what was going on during the time he was sedated. At one time the doctors did not seem sure it would come through and these were harrowing moments for Vega. Rose talks about the many friends who sent messages, about his loyal and efficient staff that kept the show going when he was not on. In the course of this he reveals something essential about himself. He did not want to simply broadcast reruns. His viewers were foremost in his mind. So guest- hosts were made use of. But the important thing to note is to understand who Charlie Rose is. He cares about his viewers. He cares about the service of informing and entertaining them. When Moyers talks about how Rose had absolute determination when he was far from it to do the kind of show he is doing now, we too understand who Charlie Rose is. He is of all the interviewers, all the hosts of American talk- shows the one who has provided the most intelligent, the most widely cultured fare for his audiences. He is the one who has not been motivated by personal greed, or even celebrity but who all along has cared to provide for his viewers truly quality shows. It is not surprising so that many missed him, prayed for him and longed for him to come back. As one who has only gotten to know the show through watching it on YouTube for the past few months I can attest to how much knowledge and entertainment it has given me- well beyond any other television show I can think of. This guy is a big blessing. And it's good to have him on the spot doing his job as usual.
