4 out of 5 stars A retrospective celebration of Made Wijaya's work over 25 years   June 6, 2008
linda's books (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico)
An informative and beautiful reference work, discussing the inspiration, themes, and practical considerations behind more than 400 of the lovliest tropical gardens in the world. Landscape architect and designer Made Wijaya provides a sound resource for professionals interested in water gardens, pavilions, paths and paving, courtyards, and other features characteristic of tropical garden design.Particular attention is given to ways to complement the architecture, and the methods of developing a story, or point of view that unites the elements of design. Emphasis is also given to the importance of observing and emulating nature, and reverent credit is given to the inspiration of Balinese culture, as well as to the design ideas found in ancient gardens of the Indo-Chinese civilizations. Includes appendices, bibliography, plant list, chronological list of the author's design projects, list of gardens mentioned in the book, and index. Additional information on some specimen plants can be found in Ornamental Plants & Flowers of Tropical Mexico.

You will find yourself repeadedly going back to this book, time & time again.
Along with William Warren's books there are no better sources of "ideas" for your tropical garden. Buy it!

I agree with some other reviewers that this is a book for day dreamers. It does not claim to be a guide to tropical garden design and it certainly is not in that category. It is a nice book with many nice early morning photographs of selected beautiful tropical gardens, mostly in Bali. It is a sharing of Michael White's philosophy of garden design oriented around controlled jungles (with high labor input in maintenance) rather than on "how to do it".It is also a fitting reminder and proof that one does not need a university degree to be successful at one's chosen profession.

This is the book that you will pick up and read over and over again as it inspires you to turn your own place into a tropical paradise. This is one of my very favorites in my personal library and I just wish there were more like it. Not a "how to" but a wonderful book for daydreams. A combination of good writing and gorgeous photographs...always a winner!
